Teaching Farming Animal Science Through Ag Communications

May 23rd, 2012 – Second SAI

Before the second evening session of Summer Ag Institute, I was invited to have dinner with Rhodora and Illinois Ag in the Classroom Staff, who would be presenting later that evening. I’ve got to say, I’ve never been to dinner with coworkers or professional people before…it made me feel adult-like!

During the second session, Illinois Ag in the Classroom (IATC) staff presented a three-hour workshop about the importance of agricultural literacy and provided dozens of lessons and activity ideas. Participants also learned of the many resources that state and local ag literacy programs have to offer, including grants, lesson ideas, and teaching resources.

I am an Animal Science major at the University of Illinois who aspires to work with livestock someday. It is my goal to promote animal agriculture for the general public to understand exactly what comes from food animals, how animal products are created, and how animals are treated.
